A Review of Boron Toxicity in Insects With an Emphasis on Termites
نویسندگان
چکیده
Managing urban pests with “environmentally-friendly” compounds has gained importance in recent years with the global deregistration of persistent organochlorine insecticides. Boron compounds, especially boric acid, zinc borate, and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, are considered excellent options for preserving lumber from insect attack as well as decay by fungi and bacteria. Remedial borate applications are used primarily to treat cockroach and flea infestations but have also achieved recent popularity as wood treatments to protect timber from colonization by subterranean termites. The goal of this review is to provide a synthesis of the research on the toxicity of boron in insects with a specific focus on termites and urban pests.

Properties, Application and Synthesis Methods of boron nitride Powder: A Review
h-BN is a multipurpose ceramic material, with exceptional properties and a wide area of application in industry. It is structurally similar to graphite and it resists oxidation to higher temperatures than graphite. It is used in powder form as a mold release agent in metal casting, as a high temperature lubricant or even in cosmetics. hBN can be shaped by hot-pressing and is used as molds or cr...
متن کاملThe effect of zinc sulfate under boron toxicity conditions on some morphophysiological and biochemical properties of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.)
Boron is an essential plant micronutrient that is involved in the cell wall and membrane structure and functioinig. Boron is often found in high concentrations in association with agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions. In order to investigate the effect of zinc sulfate on some morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of two grapvine cultivars under toxicity of boron, a ...
متن کاملHorizontal transfer of boron by the Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki) after feeding on treated wood
The goal of the present study was to determine whether Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki workers exposed to boron-treated wood were capable of transferring quantifiable amounts of boron to non-exposed nestmates. This effect is called horizontal transfer. Borates are not repellent to termites, nor do they cause rapid mortality, making them excellent candidates for the study of horizontal transfer. ...
متن کاملDifferential neurotoxic effects of silver nanoparticles: A review with special emphasis on potential biomarkers
Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained considerable interests during the last decade due to their excellent antimicrobial activities. Despite their extensive use, the potential toxicity of these nanoparticles and possible mechanisms by which they may induce adverse reactions have not received sufficient attention and no specific biomarker exist to describe and quantify their toxic effects. Na...
متن کاملEffect of zinc and boron interaction on growth and mineral composition of lemon seedlings in a calcareous soil
The impact of different concentration of zinc (Zn) and boron (B) on growth and mineral composition of lemon seedlings (Citrus Aurantifolia L.) was studied under greenhouse conditions. We used five concentration levels of B (0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 μg g-1 soil) and three of Zn (0, 5 and 10 μg g-1 soil). Fresh and dry plant weights of the control treatment were strongly decreased with B levels highe...
